Chappa Chappa Charkha Chale Lyrics

Verse 1

Little by title, the charkha spins over time.

WORD – Chappa – Part.

Charkha is a “Spinning Wheel” which was a symbol of integrity as well as of  the Indian Independence Movement. It represents self-sufficiency, unity, prosperity and continuous movement.

Lyricist, Gulzar depicts how this wheel moves slowly over time, instigating a sense of nationalism in every heart and in every nook and corner that is crosses.

Verse 2

Your ever chattering friends under the puny Beri trees. Oh Friend! Dear friend! (Reminiscing about their Mother).

The woman who used to feed us in a white (filled with pure love) bowl with her soft hands, who used to put kohl every Friday; she lives under the thatched mud archway.

WORD- Bauni: Midget; Jumme- Fridays; Munder- thatched mud archway.

FACT -  Jummah means - "Friday prayer" is a very special day in Islam. It represents people coming together to find comfort, strength and peace amongst each other. Reaffirming their faith in the higher power.

Verse 3

She used to call me in the kitchen using false excuses and would hit me with Iron tongs if I dared to trouble her.

O beloved! (Remembering their Wives) May your stove keep on burning (May happiness never leave your home).

I remember how you used to sleep wrapped in your dupatta, you looked like a lamp afloat in water. Love! There is no escape from these memories. The charkha spins little by little

WORD- Mui- Excuses; Chulha- Stove, Beeba - Lady.
