Worth Jo Scent Hai Mitti Ka Lyrics

Verse 1

A perfume, with the fragrance of mud

A perfume, that you feel is nice

The fragrance was from the Worth perfume

In the theatre at last night’s show

Although I didn’t spot you there

I could see you through the scent of the perfume

CONTEXT – Gulzar refers to a perfume called WORTH – an extremely expensive perfume company that launched more than 20 fragrances between 1924 and 1947. It was founded by Charles Frederick Worth- an English fashion designer who created the House of Worth, one of the leading French and English fashion houses of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The woman that Gulzar talks about is obviously very rich to afford the WORTH perfume.

Verse 2

There were two films, simultaneously running on screen

Along with the film running on the screen

There was another film running through my mind

When I was watching you in the role of Anna

Within the stories of Tolstoy, our stories started connecting too

The spectacle of the rain splattering on the dry earth

the petrichor of the green grass

The memories of the fragrance from your body

CONTEXT- In lines 4 and 5, Gulzar refers to Russian writer Leo Tolstoy’s novel - Anna Karenina which was later adapted into various movies too. According to a poll in TIME magazine, this book is regarded as the greatest book ever written. Gulzar definitely had great taste in literature.

Verse 3

A starry spectacle, everyone was watching you

And I was watching your wounded thumb

The bandaged one that didn’t show on the frame of the shot

And that junior artist, who, during your dance

Used to unnecessarily touch you and pass

The one that I angrily criticized

I had actually cut off his few shots too

CONTEXT - Gulzar, in his impeccable voice and, recites his poetry on how he is in awe of this woman and sees the unseen in her personality- often getting jealous of others who admire her too. His memories are associated with her last just like the scent of her perfume.

Verse 4

In the fog scene, truth to be told

I actually felt you shivering of cold

Although, I remember

How in the summers, you were tangled in the big warm coat

Verse 5

And the murky smoke that created an uproar yesterday

You even laughed at it and said

For a fire that’s so small

The arrogance of the smoke is so enormous

Verse 6

At the snowfall scene, you were as beautiful last night

As the night we returned from Pahalgam after shooting

And the news spread across the hotel that your husband

Arrived there after taking the morning flight

TRIVIA- Gulzar talks about the location of the couple’s holiday retreat in line 2 – Pahalgam.  It is a small hill station in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Pahalgam has a population of just 5,922 and is a famous tourist destination.

Verse 7

The secrets of those nights changed so many things

That night too, you tried popping some pills

the way Anna Karenina in the end of the movie

tried to take her life away by going under a train

The fragrance of the Worth perfume

spread vastly into the theatre at the night show

WORD- Tabdeel- Change

CONTEXT- Gulzar once again refers to Tolstoy’s book, Anna Karenina in line 3. He talks about how his lover was under stress as some secrets were revealed in the open. So much so that she tried to end her life. The woman was also probably so deeply immersed in her role that it had a strong impact on her real life personality too.
