Badalon Se Lyrics

Verse 1

Been cutting out names from the clouds up above

Only to bring them together on a piece of paper

What has happened to me?

Tie the moon with strings and collect bits of it all night long

What has happened to me?

CONTEXT- Lyricist, Gulzar paints a picture of a person engaged in deep daydreaming. In the process he ends up doing childish things- things that one does while daydreaming. The person is disconnected from his immediate surroundings and enters a fantasy world.

Verse 2

When I saw you once through the showers of rain

It was like looking at a singing waterfall

Since then you keep pouring over me in my sleep

You talk a lot and keep laughing at all times

I ask strangers for your whereabouts

What has happened to me?

WORD- Abshaar – Waterfall

TRIVIA- In the second line, Gulzar compares the woman to a singing waterfall. In 1948, Hank Williams wrote and recorded a hymn titled- Singing Waterfall. Williams was considered as one of the most important and impactful American singers and songwriters of the 20th century. He recorded 35 tracks during his career (five released after his death) that reached the Top 10 of the Billboard Country music chart. 11 of them were number 1 on the chart.

Verse 3

Look, you’re out here with your unadorned body

Don’t try and come to the rosy sea shore

Within these salty sea waters

Don’t bathe in them like you do

My whole day seems moonlit

And the rosy sunshine seems confused by this

With my nails, etch your name on the soft branch of a Jamun tree

What has happened to me?

WORD- Baukhlai – Crazed/Confused. Sahil – Seashore

CONTEXT- In the third last line, Gulzar describes the romantic evening using the words – Gulabi Dhoop – which means the Rosy Sun. This is a reference to the colour of the sky during sunset.
